Heather Headley to Star in ‘The Bodyguard’ the Musical; Other Successful Black Musicals
While actresses and singers from Rihanna to Paula Patton vie for a lead role in Whitney Houston’s biopic, one songstress has already been chosen to reprise a role she previously played. Heather Headley, known for her hit “In My Mind,” will take on Whitney’s role of Rachel Marron in The Bodyguard. She will be joined by Lloyd Owen who will play Frank Farmer, first portrayed by Kevin Costner.
“It’s going to be the greatest challenge of my life, but I’m ready to step into those heels,” said Headley about the role. “You don’t want people to compare you to Whitney. I didn’t want it before and especially not now after her passing.”
The musical will debut in December at London’s Aldephi Theater and will feature some of Houston’s greatest hits including “Saving All My Love,” “How Will I Know,” “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” and “I Will Always Love You.”
While the U.K. prepares for the musical version of the 1992 classic, a number of black musicals have already been successful.
