John Legend to Executive Produce New Comedy Show
R&B singer John Legend is a wiz in the studio and on a mic, but now the musical maestro is looking to prove he’s got the same magic behind the scenes on a TV show. According to reports, Legend is set to executive produce a new hip-hop themed family comedy show for NBC titled “Mixed Blessings.”
According to Deadline, after lengthy negotiations, NBC purchased the single-camera comedy show which will be executive produced by Legend, according to former NBC executive Teri Weinberg and Legend’s Get Lifted Film Co. partner, Mike Jackson.
The comedy, which is written and co-executive produced by Rob Pearlstein, is based on Jackson’s own childhood growing up in suburban Philadelphia and will center around “a prominent, black, street-bred hip-hop artist enjoying his single life who discovers that he has a teenage son and decides to connect with him and his white suburban family.”
Within the punchlines, the show will explore “culture clash and the complicated journey of a father and son beginning their relationship, as the dad soon discovers that fame, talent, and wealth get you nowhere when it comes to parenting.”
The show will be Get Lifted Film Co.’s first major venture into television. Legend previously had only one foray into film and TV, acting alongside Samuel L. Jackson and Bernie Mac, as the lead singer of their soul singing group in Soul Men.
