Chicago emcee Lupe Fiasco is known as a maverick in the hip-hop world.

Outspoken, brazen, and honest, Fiasco has garnered much attention in the past months for the release of his second single “b*tch bad” from his forthcoming album entitled Food & Liquor 2: The Great American Rap Album Pt. 1, as well as last week’s candid emotional moment with MTV’s Sway.

This past weekend, during a radio interview in Philadelphia, Lupe made a rather controversial comment aimed at President Obama’s foreign policy.

Lupe was asked who he felt was a positive influence in society, and he answered “I don’t know. On one hand, you have someone who is a great speaker, but kills little children — our president.”

Lupe Fiasco continued, “I’m talking about ordering a drone attack. Ordering drone attacks that go and kill mothers, innocent bystanders, children. Militants too, but the collateral damage. You’re responsible for that, too.”  When radio DJ Mina SayWhat defended Obama stating, “Don’t you think he’s just trying to do what’s best for this country, and to protect this country?” Lupe responded, “A drug dealer can say the same thing. ‘I didn’t mean to kill all the people in the restaurant. I was just trying to get that one dude who killed my cousin. Just so happened that that little girl was there.’ Same thing.”

I think everyone is entitled to their opinion. However, some opinions are better left unsaid. Lupe Fiasco is a great artists. I think he’s just trying too hard to stay relevant in his quest for what appears to be unattainable mainstream greatness. And in doing so, he’s obviously not understanding that in this industry (entertainment, politics and corporate), you gotta get along to go along. Unfortunately his path, although righteous to him, turns up a dead end every time.

Words of advice Lupe, “If you are, what you say you are, a Superstar, then have have no fear…” But if you’re not, take the success you have attained and embrace it as a shoulda, woulda, coulda and talk all you like. Either way homie, you’re gonna get screwed, be it literally or figuratively. For you though, its just a matter of deciding between the lesser of two evils.
