Why do you do image consulting and hair styling?

When I was younger, it kind of came to me. I noticed that whenever I [went] out with friends, I was always the one to tell my friends how to wear and style their hair. I was always instructing them on how to put things together. Eventually, I went to school for it and here I am today.

I love it. I really, really, really love it. What means a lot to me is when someone feels good about themselves. It’s like a lot of my clients, we talk and they have something going on, they are happy when their hair is finished and they feel good. I feel like I have contributed something and made them feel good.

What is the most sentimental statement a client has ever made after a service?

I have a client who has had weight issues, was introverted and felt insecure. She was moving away and we wouldn’t see each other awhile. When she said her goodbyes, she expressed how important I am to her. I weaved her hair and gave her different hairstyles that led to a lot of compliments and she became a diva. She told me I was an important part of her life and  she wouldn’t be the way she is today if it wasn’t for me.

What are your plans for Sherri’s wedding look?

We haven’t really decided what she is going to have exactly. But I did install her very first full head of weave. I will leave it at that.

What is the best wedding tip for outdoor or beach weddings?

If you like your hair in an up-do, that is really the perfect style. It’s all about your face. If you like to wear your hair flowing, I am a big fan of tussled and messy curls for the beach. I [suggest] an anti-humectant product for the beach [like] Aveda Brilliant’s pomade, Frizz-Ease 3-Day Straight Semi-Permanent Styling Spray. Some people are getting the keratin treatment, which lasts a long time.

If a person wants to change her hair color this fall, what are some things to consider?

Go to a professional. Your hair has to be healthy. Don’t go too many shades lighter without the assistance of a stylist. You will want the new color to complement your skin tone. Some people look really good in reds or blondes, but you don’t want to go too light. Experiment with highlights because you don’t want to do anything that is too damaging, and highlights let you get that change that you want.

What is the makeup trend(s) for this fall?

With fashion, it’s all about bright colors and color blocking. That will translate to makeup — a fresh face with a pop of color on your lips — oranges, tangerines, burgundies, reds and fuchsias.
