A hip-hop laureate and one of the most conscious emcees and rappers of the culture will be performing at The Metro in Chicago on May, 1st 2015.

Over the past 15 years, Yasiin Bey, formerly known as Mos Def, has represented a consistent voice of positivity and activism within the culture of hip-hop. His first solo release, Black On Both Sides was presented to Al Gore by one of Bey’s fans during his 2000 presidential campaign as an example of what true rap is.

In September of 2012, Mos Def officially changed his name to Yasiin Bey. Bey stated his name change was a result of the name Mos Def being treated as a product. He has been using it since 1999 but officially made it public in 2012.

Bey is a socially charged rapper and speaks to the ills of the world across racial and religious lines. In 2013, Bey re-enacted how prisoners of Guantanamo Bay while on a hunger strike were force fed during their protests.

As one half of the legendary rap duo Black Star and a prolific and socially aware artist, Bey has cemented himself as a clear elder statesman of hip-hop.

Bey will be performing at The Metro Chicago 3730 N. Clark St., Chicago, Ill., 60613 at 9 p.m. CST with special guest star Malik Yusef. This event is brought to you by Sean Healy Presents. Tickets are $36 for general admission and $51 for VIP.
