Spike Lee Fired From James Brown Movie as White Director Takes Over

Spike Lee will no longer be the writer and director of the highly anticipated James Brown bio-pic. The famed director was fired by producer Brian Grazer who originally hired Lee for the film shortly after Brown’s death in 2006.

Eddie Murphy, who was cast by Lee to play Brown, once told BlackTree TV that the script was a “great, great piece.”

However, Glazer decided to fire Lee and hired Tate Taylor. Taylor was the director of the film The Help.

Although the movie was critically-acclaimed, it lacked in story structure and failed to give a complete view of black life during that era. Essentially, it was a black story told from a white person’s point of view.

Before The Help, Tate only directed the lackluster film Pretty Ugly People.

His credentials are not adequate for a film as enormous as James Brown.

Lee has also directed a few duds. However, he’s mostly known for being the man behind American classics such as Do The Right Thing and Malcolm X.

Glazer’s decision to fire Lee and hire Tate proves that Hollywood continues to be a racially divided industry. Black filmmakers will only get an opportunity to tell their stories when wealthy blacks make a point to invest in the business by opening more production studios.

    I haven’t seen the movie ‘The Help’; and I don’t plan on seeing it. Black people are powerless to control the movie business because we don’t own stock in the corporations.
    Remember, it’s a “business”. Blacks can’t be dependant on welathy Blacks. That’s not a good business strategy.

          There were (and are) a whole lot of famous white actors who put on dresses in the name of comedy. I think we (black people) beat ourselves too hard when it comes to this specific issue. Although it may be a personal thing how some black men don’t want to do it, it’s just not accurate to suggest that dressing up as a woman is specifically tied to tearing down the whole black actor experience. I think it’s mostly to just try to get a laugh. Milton Berle, Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, Tom Hanks,… some of thes dudes are icons in the movie business, and they all are remembered for their comic portrayals of men in drag.

            Why is it that whenever black people began to self evaluate or self criticize we bring up what other people do? This is how we avoid correction by saying, “well other people do it, why shouldn’t we?” My question is, why can’t we have standards of our own?

            I had a very enlightening discussion with a black actor/filmmaker friend about this, in which I said exactly the same thing you said about white actors in dresses, and he set me straight. Yes, plenty of white male actors also wear drag (all of the ones you mentioned, plus Dustin Hoffman, Robin Williams, etc.). HOWEVER there is a major difference in the way that white characters wearing drag are portrayed as opposed to black characters. When white characters wear drag, they are consciously doing it to achieve some goal–to get a job (“Tootsie”, “Some Like it Hot”), housing (“Bosom Buddies”), ability to spend time with his children (“Mrs. Doubtfire”), or some other pragmatic purpose. Thus, the character has agency, and he is winking at the audience and is ‘in on the joke’, rather than being the butt of the joke himself. With black characters, on the other hand, there is no explanation as to why the character is in drag, and the character doesn’t choose it for himself. Instead, it’s simply a man playing a woman with no further explanation (“Medea”) or appearing in a dress in some sort of silly dream or fantasy sequence. Thus, the black character is in a dress without it being under his control, leaving the audience to laugh AT him, not WITH him.

    I’m a fan of Spike but as a biographical filmmaker, he leaves much to be desired. We all love him for Malcolm X but simply because he made a Malcolm X movie but that movie left out many key factors of Malcolm’s life and story. Basically he made a “safe” Malcolm X movie that was pallable to the white studio/public structure. My point is we shouldn’t just champion Spike to do a black biopic just “because” but I agree with the sentiment of hating the same ol hollywood racist practices when it comes to black filmmakers being able to helm black stories the way they see fit.

      Interesting…and you think the White director, who did The Help, would not be sure to make a film palatable to White people? Apparently, Malcolm X wasn’t palatable enough, because the studios refused to back Lee on
      Malcolm X, and other Blacks in Hollywood had to contribute for him to
      get it made. He probably had to tone it down for distribution.

        Spike Less has his own production company (40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks), and has produced (and Executive Produced) a number of films. Sometimes, you just get outbid for the rights to a project.

    I don’t know why black entertainers have not come together and opened several black owned studios. If each of them gave a mil, could you image the design and technology of the actual studio(s). And start promoting for up and coming writers, producers & directors to get some new ideas on the table or movies told from different levels. You have some kids out here with better movie material than some of the famous ones have been producing lately. With the means VH1 would be off the air. #IJS

      Okay the first problem with your statement is the “come together” part. Black people don’t do that. After the civil rights movement, as a people we practice extreme individualism and we are encouraged to stay away from collective economic activity. But I whole heartedly agree with your sentiment. I only wish there were more who thought like you and me and that we had means.

    You can count me as one who won’t be viewing this film. We have to produce our own movies,entirely. First Nina Simone now James Brown. Our icons story has to be told by us as black people. We can’t allow their legacies to be hijacked.

    How can an article jumps to such glaring conclusions without releasing the facts is awe-strikingly prove to the powers of the Internet and its powers to slander. I see so many post about this article but the most important one is not from a white nor a black place but from the perspectives of visionaries. Spike may not have had the gravitas to make this film memorable or Oscar-worthy The other gentleman has already proven the ability to capture black life in the Help.

    I am more inclined to want to see something with merit and not a story line that seems either mangled, jumbled or maligned in scope. Has nothing to do with race and as black man LOUD AND PROUD, sometimes we have to put this polarized perspective of race in our discussion on simmer and get to the heart of the matter; personalities.

    Me thinks that this may have been the intent of the writer all along.

    There is no one that champions for equality in not only Hollywood but all areas like me! So much so that my kids think I’m a bit racist, I’m not. But with that being said, I thought The Help was a great movie and I also enjoyed some of Spike Lee’s movies, but not all of them. In reality, who’s to say that just because the movie is about James Brown that it has to be directed by an African American director? Would I prefer it, most certainly but that doesn’t mean it would be the best decision. In my opinion Spike would be questionable at best as director. Look at “Ray” which won Jamie Foxx an Oscar and was directed by a white director, Taylor Hackford.

    I agree that we need to own studios and production companies to be able to do our own projects. When Spike was in his time and was really chiming out several movies and was on “THE” list, why didn’t he invest his money into then buying his own studio? Now he complains about T. Perry and the types of movies that he does but Tyler is cranking them out, he employs many African Americans on both sides of the camera and is doing very well. And don’t get me wrong, I don’t like all of T. Perry’s movies either and would not want him to direct it. But, I am saying we need to stop complaining about this. After all, James Brown was an American Music Icon and celebrated by all races, not just us.

    The Help was a great book and movie. It followed the book pretty much to the T. In the book, it does follow a white woman’s perspective on what she learned of her maid’s life later on in life. It is what it is, and it’s worth reading/seeing. However, for a movie about James Brown, I would definitely prefer to see it made by Spike Lee. Also, why was Bamboozled left off the list? To me, that is one of the best.

    See if Spike wasn’t such a hater towards Tyler Perry he could have teamed up with someone that actually owns his on production studio as well as a company. When it comes to making movies Tyler Perry doesn’t have to go to Hollywood to make a movie, all he needs is a company to distribute the movie. We all know that Lionsgate distributes the bulk of TP movies. As of 2012, it is the most commercially successful independent film and television distribution company in North America and the seventh most profitable movie studio. See Spike you have to be careful not to mess with one of God’s own you never know how things will work or play out. I think Spike is a great person, but sometimes you have to know which battles to fight and which ones to concede. I know I will not be going to see this movie and it’s not because of who is directing it but, they just don’t know JB like WE do point blank period.

    We definitely need to boycott. Real fans of James Brown that can read have his albums and the internet. They can find out anything they want to know. Have we become so lazy that if it is not spoon fed on a screen, we can’t find it. Come on, People show some power. This is not about Spike Lee, this is about people having the audacity to make a piece of crap like “The Help” and call it a film about African Americans. This is about Spike Lee, a black man, not afforded the respect on National TV when interviewed about his Kickstarter campaign. He stood his ground during that interview, just as he was supposed to. No one has ever been questioned when accessing funds for their artistic projects. That was an insult and this replacement was the cherry on top. We are not making move for Lee.     The problem is not Spike and film, the problem is that black people do not practice group economics. We are not economically in the position to take control no matter the industry. This include hip hop. If we want change we have to develop a plan of black autonomy or this kind of thing will continue to happen. By the way, why was he fired?       I see no indication that he was fired because of his race. If that WAS the reason. He’s got an easy slam-dunk discrimination lawsuit against the producers. It’s not unheard of for directors to be replaced in mid-steam for a variety of reasons. Spike CAN be a jerk at times. Many hard-driving geniuses are.

    Spike Lee is no genius. He is a clumsy writer at best who has no idea how to end his movies in ways that make sense. The best work he has ever done was as a hired director shooting other people’s scripts. That includes Malcolm X. If Spike wrote the James Brown movie, you could immediately write it off as not being coherent (much less any good).

    Stop whining because Spike Lee loses a job (which film makers do on an hourly basis in this business) as if that’s proof of racism. If he never makes another film again, he will have been lucky to have the career he’s had.

    Especially stop the whining about black film makers not being “given the freedom to make their movies the way they see fit”. You want freedom? Get it the same way the white corporations do. Spend your own money to make and distribute movies and *no one* can say jack to you. It’s not that hard and it doesn’t cost that much. Seriously.

    The real question is why was Spike Lee fired. It has been said that he is difficult to work with. His rendition of Malcolm X was not that great by the way. This article also complains that “The Help” was a black experience told by whites. Absolutely correct, did you bother to read the book that the movie was based on? That was the whole premise.     I did not like “The Help” for many reasons. The Direction being one of them. This is sad news. There are SO many amazing African-American choices to direct this film even if the Producer didn’t want Spike. I won’t be paying to see it either. Need to make a change and on this one- they won’t be getting mine.

    We have enough Black wealth in Hollywood to pool together and create and tell our own stories. The wealth and power that Blacks have can be pooled together and not depend on someone else. Oprah has a network, Tyler has a studio, and many others have the resources to work together and do our own thing. Black power need to work together and pool their resources and make it happen. Why are we still depending on others to create and tell our stories. All of the wealthy Blacks in America should be able and willing to work together, and not rely on others to control our history.

    Casting Eddie Murphy as James Brown was the easy way out… it was clear that he was not willing to go out on a limb, and create something great.
    He has had this project since 2006, way too long.
    Color should not matter in who does a good joc. Look at The Color Purple…

    I haven’t seen a bad Spike flick. Name any writer/director with as many films as Spike and they will have a dud or two too, but that’s besides the point. I’ve got Spike’s back. I work in corporate jobs and you will not believe how funky white people get over the silliest things, and have the nerve to riot over that ish. And gets who gets painted as the villain?? Fuck that, I’m not watching this shee-it!!

    A couple things: 1) There are several good films about prominent Blacks which were not directed/written by Blacks…so let’s not judge whether this is a good or bad film due to the lack of brothas/sistas behind the camera. 2) I’m waiting to hear Spike Lee’s comments before I go bananas and boycott the flick. It could very well be that Spike’s card was pulled by Glazer; and if so I won’t see the movie b/c I’m a big Lee fan. But if it turns out that Spike made unreasonable demands or did something else that indicates he wouldn’t play ball with the team…then I’ll still go see the movie.

    The backers want the singing dancing party animal james brown, and Lee wants the deeper side, the minister, activist, the publics outrage at his shows,things he said !, he was on the CIA hit list like John Lennon, his act was so amazing no one would be on the bill with him at times. There’s a lot more to james brown than his entertainer side, and just like most of american history, the powers that be want that side erased.

    I really hate to say this but some of you Black folks have lost your mind! Judging from the comments in many of the post I read, none of you ever saw The Help yet you comment on it’s message and perspective as if you are a Professor of African American Studies and the Arts! If you haven’t seen it, you don’t deserve to comment on it….PERIOD!

    The message of The Help really has no baring on whether or not it’s director (a white man) should or should not direct the James Brown biopic. When did we as Black folks own James Brown? When he was still alive and touring, how many of you went to see him? Did you buy any of his late music or did you write him off at the time as a washed up, has been who was no longer relevant? Don’t even bother to answer!

    I live in Atlanta, GA, I worked at Morehouse College where Spike attended and supports, that doesn’t mean I co-sign or agree with everything he says and does. I am a proud Black man and raise my family to be the same but guess what, I also teach them about diversity. We live in a diverse world with people of various ethnicity’s. Everyone is not out to get us and despite the belief of many on this post, we aren’t the only ones that can tell our story!

    I grew up on James Brown and if an African American director could direct this project I would be all for it. However, I am not going to say that if it is not Spike or another Black director that does it I will boycott the movie. The movie will no doubt employ many African American actors (who by the way already find it difficult to get work in Hollywood) and it will celebrate an American Music Legend, James Brown that was a black man loved and appreciated around the world! Stay home when the movie comes out if you want to, I’ll be in line buying my popcorn with my family ready to enjoy a story of one of my musical hero’s.

    Glazer may not be racist. But at the very least he made a lazy, uninspired choice with the hiring of Tate Taylor. Basically it was “Spikes out and so let’s get that white Southern guy who “understands” Black folks.” He’d do better to cancel Tate and hire Lee Daniels.

    So now black people’s stories belong to them? Whatever happened to the multicultural ethic of “we are all the same underneath”? Maybe Spike was booted because of a straight up business decision. The reason there is a racial divide is apparent from some of the comments here from black people who still count themselves as a separate nation within a nation. Life is disappointing at times, even for Spike Lee. It’s not a conspiracy.

    Spike was fired, before we jump to conclusions find out why. It’s not always a BLACK discrimination thing, if that was the case he would have never been hired.
    We as a people must get to the place although rather hard where I can tell a story whether or not I belong to that race. It is so easy to say that we have been done wrong because as black people we have been done wrong for so long, but that is turning around, and we must keep moving forward to continue the progress of those that sacrificed so much.     Little known but successful black professional…suggest some keep an eye on him, his work and his ancestry. Antoine Fuqua dis-spells the fact of Blacks not being able to work within Caucasian controlled Hollywood. And it’s not necessary to be in every tabloid or article to be successful. Sometimes better to read the credits, then the comments on social media.

    This is pathetic , it’s not a race issue . Blacks should direct black movies ? White should direct white movies ? Asians should direct Asian movies ? And so on & so on ….. The Help won a black woman an Academy Award , the movie was well revived & unfortunately Spike Lee has not made a good film in years . Inside man wasn’t bad but realize Malcolm X & Do the right thing were filmed over 20 years ago . Spike has lost tons of investors $$ since those films & the only thing wrong here is that fool AMIR SHAW , who ain’t doing the right thing by writing untelligent articles like this ….. Black or white , Shaws a jackass period

    As much as I love Spike Lee, we don’t know exactly what happened. The article lacks depth, and we can’t assume it was a black vs. white issue. Producers are only concerned about costs and profit. Maybe it was based on the latter that he made the decision. Who knows?

    Who is sowing the racial division here? Just asking… because there is the possibility that Spike Lee didn’t do James Brown justice. After all, Lee was hired to begin with, and James Brown is obviously an iconic black singer who is being brought to the big screen. What, they are going to honor James Brown by tearing him down? Obviously, his life was troubled in some aspects, but people of all skin colors loved him nonetheless. Not everything is a racial conspiracy, and there are things that have only to do with performance.

    I didn’t know Spike Lee was ever attached to this project. I saw the trailers and it looked like the silliest piece of fluff I could imagine. The fact that the producers think marketing it as by the same director of “The Help” doesn’t sell me. If anything it makes make want to run the other way.
