Singer, songwriter and self-proclaimed triple threat Tami LaTrell finally has released the long-awaited mixtape, Through My Eyes: The Anatomy of A Songwriter. LaTrell began her career writing songs as an independent artist until her song, “Whatchulookinat,” landed on Whitney Houston’s Just Whitney album. From there, she continued writing and recording and was offered a co-publishing deal with EMI Music Publishing.
In addition to Whitney Houston, LaTrell has written for Keyshia Cole, Malik Yoba (“Barbershop” webisode series), Chamillionaire, Devin The Dude, J-Dawg and Shei Atkins as well as many multiplatinum producers, such as BlacElvis, Soulshock and Karlin, Errol McCalla and The Ambassadorz. She is currently signed as a recording artist to her independent label, StarFactory Entertainment, LLC. –alex green
Do you consider yourself a songwriter or singer?
I’ve always been both! Songwriting just happened to open the door into the music industry for me first. But I’m blessed to have such an amazing gift, and I don’t take for granted that I’m a true artist. So, I maintain my integrity as an authentic creator who God uses as a vessel, putting songs in my head daily and, with that in mind, I’m very passionate about what I write and sing about.
What is your musical genre?
I’m an R&B-pop, mainstream recording artist. When you hear my songs, you will think, “I can hear this on the radio!” My swag is smooth, yet my lyrics are strong and dynamic. I sing in four octaves, plus I love to dance. So, I’m a triple threat.
What upcoming projects are you working on?
I’m still songwriting daily, and I have a few placements coming soon. We are currently pushing my mixtape hard and, off of that, we are working my first single, “Coastin’,” available on iTunes now. We just shot the video for “Coastin’,” directed by DJ Young Samm, so be looking out! Webisode #3 from my reality series, “Through My Eyes” on youtube.com/tamilatrell, will be dropping in two weeks. I also just landed an endorsement with Too Faced Cosmetics, and we are doing the official launch party in August. Also, I’m planning something very special for The Writer’s Block this fall. I go back in the studio to work on my debut album [currently untitled] in July. I’m so excited!
