The Stormy Days Are Over for South African Artist Jonathan Butler

On a stormy day you can count the clouds within your purview but the question is can you see the silver lining in each one of them? Veteran Grammy nominated South African singer-songwriter; Jonathan Butler has had enough stormy days over the past year to the point that he’s mastered the art of finding hope in life’s dark clouds.

After losing his dear friend, musician Wayman Tisdale, and supporting his wife, Barenese, through her battle with cancer, Butler is ready to celebrate his strength and newfound joy on the new album, So Strong.

“In the midst of all the bad I had to put this album together. I wanted it to feel good and to share the optimism that I always have. There is a lot of joy on this record and you do get stronger through trials. My studio is next to the kitchen at home and my family can hear everything. They encouraged me to have fun and make people feel good,” he says.

In order for Butler to get to a place of joy he had to learn patience when it came to his faith in God.

“There is something that happens when you say you trust God and surrender — you have to trust. It taught me patience and healing is a process. It’s not just overnight and I’ve had to learn that.”

butler has also come to terms with his own mortality, which has inspired his commitment to live every day to the fullest.

“You think about your own mortality when you experience these things. I made a conscious decision to celebrate my life and not be negative. The world is in a recession with political and social divides and there is sadness and uncertainty. I think sometimes when you get caught up with that you miss out on this grace that with each day we get an opportunity to do or say something positive. So I just want to continue to do God’s will through music by putting a smile on people’s faces wherever I go.”

Butler will be on tour this month with his friend and fellow musician Dave Koz, pointing out the silver lining in each cloud along the way.souleo
