Toya Wright surprises victim of tragic car accident in Detroit

Toya Wright and Basia Ruffin

On Sunday May 18, 2014, New York Times Best-selling author and entrepreneur, Toya Wright, flew to Detroit to surprise a college graduate who had suffered several injuries from a tragic car accident. The 23-year-old survivor, Basia Ruffin, was involved in a very severe car accident in 2009 where she was ejected from her vehicle after being off-roaded. The accident resulted in a broken neck among other very painful injuries and essentially altered the trajectory of her very young life. During her two year recovery period, Ruffin found inspiration from the very successful Mrs. Wright after watching her hit reality TV show “Tiny and Toya.” Wright’s determination and persistence in following her dreams to become an entrepreneur in the fashion industry and to build a name for herself after living in the shadows of her rap superstar ex-husband Lil Wayne, sparked something inside of Ruffin and motivated her to pursue her dreams of attending college and finding her niche in the world of fashion as well. Ruffin graduated from Oakland Community College earning her associate degree in business administration.

After hearing of Ruffin’s story, the very compassionate Wright surprised Ruffin by attending her graduation celebration. Ruffin’s graduation celebration was a very elegant affair, decorated with beautiful white and gold center pieces and a 3-tier cake made of single dollar bills. Ruffin’s family also surprised the graduate with an ice sculpture in the shape of a “B.” Ruffin was overcome with emotion and extremely excited to have Wright’s support and attendance for her big accomplishment.

Wright congratulated Ruffin on overcoming her obstacles and pressing on toward her dreams of being a celebrity stylist and fashion and textile merchandiser for major brand businesses. The remainder of the night was filled with lots of love, photos and dancing.

Ruffin plans to continue her education by obtaining a bachelor’s degree in fashion and textile merchandising.
