Over 500-plus invited guests gathered at the home of the junior Leaks, Donna and Spencer Leak, Jr. for A Classic Summer’s Evening. The owners of Leak and Sons Funeral home graciously opened their home for a celebration of life and summer. The event was organized effortlessly down to limousine rides for those who had to park remotely. Upon entry, guests received beverages and were greeted with kind words. The front lawn was lined with classic automobiles from Leaks’ collection. The sounds of Grammy award-winning DJ Terry Hunter and Ron Troupe filled the air. Guests mixed and mingled, ate great food, and caught up with friends they have not seen for some time.

The entertainment for the evening was Morris Gearring’s Something About Oscar Brown, Jr. This one-man show focuses on the poetry, music and lyricism of Oscar Brown, Jr. Gearring entertained guests with his rendition of “Signifying Monkey”, “Hazel Hips,” and “Snake,” all classics from Oscar Brown’s discography.

We had an opportunity to ask Spencer Leak, Jr., who represents three generations of Leak and Sons, why his family thought it was important to have this event.

He said, “We wanted to show appreciation to our friends. We have serviced friends and family of most of the people here. I don’t get a chance to hang out and party like I used to because I’m always at work. So me and my wife wanted to take one day out of the summer and say thank you to our friends for being friends and being supportive of our business and being supportive of us.”

We appreciate the Leak family, what they mean to Chicago and more specifically to the legacy of Black business. Thank you for A Classic Summer’s Evening.
