With America growing in more ways than one, the alarm bells continue to ring in the war against obesity. We are a society of fast — fast cars, fast boats, fast planes, and fast food. It is the infatuation that we have with speed that has led to our growing waistlines. Our diets are typically not organized, but rather ‘fit in’ to the available slots in our increasingly busy schedules.

With diet being secondary to getting other things done, and living life in general; we generally grab whatever is convenient. Now the country is turning its attention to scaling back the fat. Many of us are focused on getting back to our healthy weights, and some are just trying to maintain their slender physiques. Here we offer highlights of  seven of the most famous diets around. As they say, always consult your doctor before beginning a new diet or exercise regimen. That said, check these out and see what works best for you and your lifestyle.

  1. The Atkins Diet:  Atkins focuses on consuming a bit more protein and carefully leveling out the amount of insulin that we take in. Sharp rises and falls in insulin cause the body to hold on to fat — Atkins looks to combat this trend.
  2. The Zone Diet:  The Zone diet carefully balances the amount of carbs, fats and protein that we take in — to result in improved chances of weight loss and control.
  3. Vegetarian Diet: Vegetarians completely avoid red meat (which can cause you to be lethargic — as it slows down the metabolism). Vegetarian diets are varied, but generally are thought to be effective at improving overall health in addition to weight loss.
  4. Vegan Diet:  This is generally considered a lifestyle rather than a diet option. Vegans avoid any foods that are animal based, opting for a strict diet of plant-based foods.
  5. Weight Watchers Diet: Weight Watchers has been a successful movement for years — monitoring portion sizes, encouraging exercise & providing a community of like-minded individuals in a social-type organization.
  6. South Beach Diet: Like the Atkins diet, the South Beach diet focuses on controlling insulin levels — extolling the virtues of unrefined carbs over fast carbs.
  7. Raw Food Diet: The Raw Food diet offers a simple alternative, involving the consumption of generally raw plant-based foods. Raw food dieters believe that a significant portion of the diet should be composed of uncooked foods.
