"Freaknik: The Musical" made its debut on the Cartoon Network's Adult Swim channel shortly after the Oscars concluded on Sunday. Starring T-Pain as the lead voice, the one-hour cartoon tells the story of a hip-hop group called the Sweet Tea Mobstars as they attempt to win a rap contest at Freaknik — the annual college spring break party that took place in Atlanta during the 1990s.
The show features the voices of several rap stars whose characters proudly show off their gold teeth, gold chains and unreleased music. It also touches on the generational divide between blacks by mocking the disapproval that many older blacks have towards hip-hop.
"Freaknik: The Musical" takes a no-holds-barred approach to comedy in the manner of shows like "Family Guy" and "Chappelle's Show." For those who watched the debut of "Freaknik:The Musical," was it offensive to blacks, or pure comedy genius? –amir shaw
