Four years ago, Danielle Knox partnered with her sister and established a company to assist women with uncomfortable and unsightly problems with their skin. After several attempts to successfully address the eczema condition that plagued the pair since childhood, The CBS Atlanta TV anchor and her sibling developed a remedy to correct the dry, itchy areas of skin.
The solution was discovered after Knox received a book of recipes for homemade products for hair and skin care. This time she was seeking relief not for herself or her sister, but her young son. He too was suffering from eczema. She shared the book with her sister and dreamed up an idea to create their own body butters. The two spent hours in the kitchen developing recipes for creams, lotions and body washes that they tested on family and friends. They shipped test versions back and forth to each other’s homes to sample. They soon realized their products worked because they were free of irritating ingredients commonly found in many other brands that compounded the problem.
The sisters decided to call their products Play Pretty because the name and the product are whimsical and fresh. The name was actually derived from a life lesson their grandmother taught them. They remembered their grandmother saying to them as active little girls growing up in California who played like tomboys in her backyard to "play pretty." “We wanted something that reminded us of our childhood,” said Knox. “Our grandmother always told us that we were headstrong.”
The Play Pretty Beauty product line contains whipped body butter, scrubs, shampoo and shower gels made with essential oils and other natural ingredients. The line also carries elegant candles with uplifting and energizing scents that can be ordered online. So far, the new body care line has found success among beauty lovers in search of organic products that work, to heal their skin problems. Today, Knox and her sister are still toying around with new product ideas, but this time playing pretty never felt or smelled so good. “Women love our products, because they just smell like tropical wind that breezes by you on vacation,” says Knox. The ladies are working hard to expand their Play Pretty Beauty line into retail stores and spas. –marian anderson
