Controversial rapper Azealia Banks is making her next play on the big screen. The New York native, who most recently made headlines for landing the cover of Playboy, has just nabbed her first starring role in a feature film.

In the musical drama, Banks plays an aspiring 20-something rapper Coco, who dreams of a career in hip-hop but is torn by her parents’ wishes that she finish college. She gives in and enrolls in school, only to discover the true calling of the power of the spoken word, which aids her goals as a hip-hop artist.

Starring alongside Banks in the Lionsgate and Codeblack film that will be directed by Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA are Common, Jill Scott, Lucien Laviscount, Lorraine Toussaint and Hana Mae Lee. Most recently, RZA directed the kung-fu movie The Man With the Iron Fists. The Hollywood Reporter has compared the upcoming flick to 8 Mile. Sounds interesting..
