‘Fast and Furious’: A billion-dollar enterprise

Entering its third weekend in theaters, Furious 7 has earned an estimated $735.2 million overseas and an estimated $273.7 million in North America. Early predictions reveal the film could reach as high as $1.3 billion to $1.4 billion by the end of its run. It joins the ranks of Titanic ($2,783,919,005), Avatar ($2,207,615,686) and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey ($1,014,703,584).

The film stars the late Paul Walker, Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Jason Statham, and Ludacris, has propelled the Fast & Furious series past $3 billion worldwide ($3.392 billion).


Furious 7 is the first Universal project to make it to the $1 billion mark in its original run. It is the first film to reach $1 billion in 17 days. It took 19 days for The Avengers, Avatar and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. It is the highest-grossing domestic ($147.2 million) and international ($250 million) openings in Universal Studios’ history.
