2 Chainz: ‘Based On A T.R.U. Story’ Album Review

2 chainz deluxe

2 Chainz raps to his fans like it’s just the two of you sitting around the trap house, smoking the finest ganja, having a real conversation.

Based On A T.R.U. Story gives us insight into his days of being Tity Boi, defying the hood standard, and now being considered one of the hottest rappers around right now.

“Real hip-hop” heads might find this album hard to swallow, as 2 Chainz rhymes words that wouldn’t have any relation without his southern slang.  And if it is your first time hearing 2Chainz, you might even question his rapping abilities.

The G.O.O.D. music affiliate brings true street credibility to the hip hop scene and other collaborators such as Drake, who’s featured on “No Lie” and Nicki Minaj who 2 Chainz featured on “I Luve Dem Strippers” and in return, featured him on “Beez in the Trap”.

Many hip hop fanatics are wondering what did Tity Boi do to become the successful 2 Chainz that is taking over the radio waves today.  What makes 2 Chainz stand out from the other tall, long-dreaded, shade-wearing rappers that have hit the scene in the past couple of years?  You won’t find that answer here, nor in the song titled “I’m Different”.

2 Chainz and similar rappers make you take a long hard look at our community and our industry.  Young men who have spent most of their lives chasing the buck and less time sculpting their flow have become the forefront of our hip hop conversations.  Money talk and king pin bragging rights have overpowered the powerful messages that was once heard in our precious genre.   Keeping up with the latest automobiles, the newest luxury brands, and big booty strippers have become more important than productive relationships and investing our finances for the betterment of our lives.

2 Chainz did sneak a few messages into his 17 track album by way of “Ghetto Dreams” featuring rapper Scarface and soul singer John Legend.  Though Scarface was the predominate preacher while Legend incorporated his soulful voice into the track, it’s on 2 Chainz’ album so I suppose he wins by default.

If you’re looking for a heavy hitting trap album about “getting to the money” by any means necessary, then this is the perfect album for you.  If you are looking to be served something inspirational, knowledge filled, and lyrical genius, I suggest you look yonder.

In the meantime, take a look at some stylish pictures of 2 Chainz.
