Touching upon such diverse topics as black culture and what it means to America, his beloved hometown, and even family structure, Chicago-based rapper Landon Battles proves on his new project, Black Gold, that he firmly believes in infusing his music with a message.

Songs such as “Fathers Day,” “Gang Related,” and “Holy Hallelujah” showcase the young emcee’s heartfelt and sometimes witty lyrics as he carves out a sound all his own that isn’t afraid to delve into other genres such as R&B, reggae and pop.

Describing himself as the “Alternative Rapper” because of his ability to mix it up, Battles says with this particular project he kind of had to throw caution to the wind and do what felt natural for him.

“I got into a zone where I was just making music and not caring what people think,” he says. “That brought along my confidence and helped me to break down the barriers I made for myself.”

With distribution by Sony/Orchard/IndieFresh and features from legendary lyrical titan Ras Kass and fellow Chicago spitter The Boy Illinois, Battles, who created a buzz for the project via his signature branding hashtag of #FocusedFridays that saw him release a song every Friday, says the overall theme is just progression.

“Basically on Black Gold I was trying to do everything better than the last project. Just better lyrics, better stories, and better messages. Isn’t that what it’s all about?”

Black Gold is available for free download at Audiomack.com or DatPiff.com.
