Amber Rose, Adrienne Bosh and the culture of ‘slut-shaming’

Two fairly well-known, quasi-celebrity women were making headlines this week.

Neither was a singer. Nor an actress. But both were fixtures on every urban gossip blog and entertainment news site at various times over the past week. Amber Rose, the sexy model and fiancée to rapper Wiz Khalifa, had to deny reports that she had given birth to she and Wiz’s baby —only for little Sebastian Taylor Thomaz to show up unexpectedly a day later. Adrienne Bosh’s attention came from a decidedly less wholesome place; hip-hop superstar Lil Wayne launched an angry tirade at a party during NBA All-Star weekend and brazenly announced that he had sex with Adrienne, who is married to the Miami Heat’s superstar forward, Chris Bosh.

These two women both have “party girl” histories that consistently get revisited, by the media and by the general public. Rose was once a stripper, has been featured in scantily-clad pictorials in numerous men’s magazines and photographed topless on beaches (and posing for boyfriends wearing nothing but stiletto heels.) So, of course, Wiz’s affections for her have been mocked by those who have decided that Rose is a attention-craving freak and a gold digger. After all, she used to date Kanye West and he dumped her unceremoniously. And a woman with a sexually aggressive image is a whore, says the law of patriarchy.

And, as we all know, “you can’t turn a ho into a housewife.”

(But, apparently you can turn one into a husband?)

Which brings us to the curious case of Adrienne Bosh.
