After it was reported earlier this month that OutKast rapper André 3000 would play Jimi Hendrix in an upcoming indie biopic, reps from Hendrix’s estate have now blocked the production of the biopic.

According to The Boombox, Experience Hendrix and their CEO, Hendrix’s sister, Janie, which own the rights to all Hendrix material and images, have “made it known many times in the past that no such film, were it to include original music or copyrights created by Jimi Hendrix, can be undertaken without its full participation.”

Despite the demise of the biopic, Experience Hendrix did confirm that a documentary about the “Foxy Lady” rocker is currently in the works, “With Sony Legacy, our partner, we are active in releasing documentary material starring, so to speak, Jimi Hendrix as himself and plan to continue on this path.”

Earlier this month, it was reported that André 3000 was offered the role after up-and-coming singer Jason Derulo turned down the part to focus on his sophomore album, Future History, according to MTV-UK.

Something tells us that André 3000, with his eccentric style and notable acting chops, would’ve been a better fit for the role. Sadly, the world will never know. –nicholas robinson

Jimi Hendrix was not known as simply, a singer, he is
considered the greatest rock & roll guitarist of all time; and before he
died, he was revisiting his Blues Roots. I do hope that Andre` is allowed to
complete the film and that it is supported. One of the unfortunate facts is
that a large majority of Black people know very little about this man, similar
to what’s happened regarding Bob Marley and Fela Kuti. I think Andre looks a
lot like Jimi and he seems to be a decent actor, plus, he’s always had that something
extra in his personality, a certain charisma that is needed to capture the
brilliant Jimi Hendrix. People should youtube a guy named, Anthony Aquarius, he does an amazing tribute to Hendrix and can actually play a hell of a lot of guitar.
