Chris Brown Explains How Rihanna Assault Changed His Career
Just four years ago, Chris Brown was on the fast track to becoming one of pop’s biggest superstars. The boy from small town Tappahannock, VA, had two hit albums under his belt, scores of fans and pop’s next head diva, Rihanna, on his arm. But, all that came to a screeching halt in early 2009, when he assaulted Rihanna on the night of the Grammy’s. Brown’s career quickly went down the toilet and it’s only been a little over the last year that he’s been able to resurrect it. Now, in a new revealing interview with MTV, Brown explains how his infamous assault changed everything for him.
During the interview in MTV’s “This Is How I Made It,” Brown recounts his his infamous Grammy Awards return earlier this year and how it felt to take home his first award.
“Firsthand to win a Grammy Award, it was just the most, like that bliss feeling again. I appreciate it so much to this day; I have it on a mantle and the light on it,” he explained.
However, Brown acknowledges that his domestic dispute with Rihanna tainted the public’s perception of him and forced him to work on winning back fans and work on his issues.
“Having to get personal opinion back and having to gain personal success back, you know, it’s not all the way back you know. But it’s one of my most humbling experiences,” Brown explained. “I can’t hate people for making judgment on me, or making the decision of liking me or not liking me. All I can do is try to be better as a person, and I’m good with knowing everything isn’t always going to be perfect.”
Despite all of the criticism and scrutiny, Brown fought to reclaim his once thriving career and hopes that his story can help inspire others to persevere through personal failure and hardships.
“My story, or my life, or my legacy can hopefully show them that once you’re down, that don’t just mean you’re down forever. You never let up,” said Brown.
Although, Brown is still involved in a dramatic love affair with Rihanna, it’s admirable that he has embraced his penance and has been working to make himself a better man.
