Dwight Trible Describes How Hip-Hop, R&B and Soul Derived From Jazz

Dwight Trible is one of the most renowned jazz singers of his generation. He has mastered the fine art of improvisation and musicianship. The Chicago native has worked alongside jazz greats such as Oscar Brown Jr., Kenny Garrett, Harry Belafonte and Della Reese.

Trible recently released his new album, Cosmic. He spoke with rolling out magazine about his musical influences, the importance of jazz to black music, and the future of jazz. –amir shaw

When did you first fall in love with the beauty of music?

I believe it started at the moment of my conception. We all have been blessed to be born with certain inclinations. Some things are as natural as breathing. Music happens to be the gift that I have been assigned to contribute to humanity.

What have you learned most about the power of music during your journey?

Be careful how you use it. Remember, music is an anointing from God. Music has the power to heal, to educate, to motivate, to energize to galvanize, to make the weak strong, to bring love in the midst of pain and strife. Music can excite nations to war and cause individuals to destroy themselves and others.

 What can fans expect from your new album, Cosmic?

A message of love, peace and a belief that the creator truly doe’s have a master plan. Cosmic is soulful jazz and spirit-filled music.

Why is it important for the younger generation to become more aware of jazz?

Jazz is a part of the African American musical tree of life. Gospel, blues and jazz are the root of everything that is being done today. This is the holy trinity of black music. The youngsters need to familiarize themselves [with] all three of these art forms.

 What advice do you give aspiring artists who want to delve into jazz?

Jazz must move forward and evolve. Study the masters. What you will see is  they all had the courage to follow the lead of the spirit inside. This is how they created new sounds, new styles and new music.
