Drake Executive Producing Aaliyah’s ‘New’ Album?
Drake’s love for Aaliyah knows no bounds. Since his debut, the impassioned rapper has called the fallen singer his greatest inspiration and he even has her face tattooed on his back. And now it seems that Drake will finally get to fulfill his dream of working with Aaliyah as a new report claims that he will executive produce her posthumous album.
In March, Aaliyah’s producer, Jeffrey “J. Dub” Walker, revealed on Twitter that a posthumous album was in the works and that an unreleased song called “Steady Ground” would appear on it. However, Aaliyah’s brother, Rashad Haughton, denied that their would be a posthumous album.
Later that month, Drake revealed to U.K. radio host Tim Westwood that he had something special in the works in regards to Aaliyah.
“I have some great Aaliyah news coming soon. Some special things,” said Drizzy. “Just some special things, you know. Great things for music, period.”
Now, HipHopDX has reported that a reliable source is claiming that Drake’s “Aaliyah news” is her posthumous album, which he’ll executive produce. Details about the album are still scarce, but Drake, who previously sampled Aaliyah’s “At Your Best (You Are Love)” for his “Unforgettable” track, will reportedly feature Aaliyah’s vocals on a new single which he’ll debut the OVO Festival on Aug. 5, in Toronto.
It’s unclear yet about who will actually produce the album, but if Drake really is sitting at the helm of the project, it’s more than likely that his producer, Noah “40” Shebib, and his friend, Timbaland, who shaped Aaliyah’s classic sound, will handle at least some of the projects production.
Either way, we’re intrigued to hear how this will sound. And, hopefully, it will rank highly with the rest of Aaliyah’s great collaborations, like the ones we’ve listed below. – nicholas robinson
