Why is Jay Z being sued for $600 million?

Once Jay Z decided to go full blast with his Roc Nation Sports agency he had to forfeit his small share of the Brooklyn Nets, but that has not stopped him from being named a defendant in a $600 million lawsuit levied against the franchise and the NBA.

According to reports, a Louisiana businessman named Dr. Francois de Cassagnol has filed suit against Jay Z, the Brooklyn Nets, the NBA, and developer Bruce Ratner for essentially stealing the name “Brooklyn Nets” that he claims to have trademarked over a decade ago. De Cassagnol says the named parties “fraudulently conspired” to dupe the U.S. Patent Office and when he inquired with NBA officials previously, he was told the team would probably go by the name “The New York Nets.”

The NBA previously won an appeal filed to the patent office, and it was determined that de Cassagnol didn’t file his paperwork until after it was announced that the Nets were moving to Brooklyn and the NBA’s trademark application does not in any way conflict with de Cassagnol’s businesses based in Louisiana.

It was after that judgement that de Cassagnol decided to pursue his current multimillion dollar lawsuit.
