Ken Ford's 'State of Mind' Expands His Reach: Album Review

Ken Ford will never confine himself to a specific sound. Ford has the ability to delve into jazz, funk, classical, soul and hip-hop without missing a beat or a string. The sensational violinist returns with his fourth CD, State of Mind.

The album commences with the retrospective track, “Guttaville.” After a subtle opening, Ford allows the beat to build and is later joined by strong snare drums, a guitar riff and cymbals.

On the soulful “Free Fall,” Ford is joined by singer Angela Blessett who sings, “Set your mind free, let go of everything and fall free.”

Ford takes a go at hard-core hip-hop with the title track “State of Mind.” He covers the violins that were prevalent in Snoop Dogg and C-Murder’s hit, “Down For My Hitters.” That song also includes 808 drums and an electric guitar.

The album concludes with “Moment In Love.” Ken shows off his classical skills by covering portions of Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 5 in C Minor” and making it his own.

With State of Mind, Ford continues to expand his reach as an all-around violinist. –amir shaw
