“Black people not showed in the media/ I was told, if you got an afro, or you got a big nose/ That your lips are too big, you’re talking low/ My people understand, so why you don’t know?”

Lil B celebrates the beauty of blackness and the uplifting of people in his latest video, “No Black Person Is Ugly.” The controversial Bay Area rapper rhymes over a subdued backdrop of muted percussion and guitar lines. “Sometimes my skin is the reason I’m alive today,” he raps as he references police harassment and the marginalization of black people.

The rapper also addresses rape culture (“No means no”) and violence (“Hands up for peace”) throughout the track. He rhymes about media and propaganda while returning to the theme of unity and love. The video features the images of people from all walks off life, young and old, men and women, gay and straight, beaming beautifully in their humanity–interspersed with artwork ranging from kids’ drawings to murals on neighborhood walls.

Lil B has become known for championing love and peace via his Twitter feed and “No Black Person Is Ugly” continues in that vein.

Even if you’re not a fan of The Based God, you have to acknowledge that he’s pretty well-intentioned here.
