It was widely reported on May 22 that rapper-actor Mos Def, who now goes by the name Yasiin Bey, was denied entry into the United States for a planned tour. But according to the South African-based media publication Times Live, those reports are completely false.

Bey moved to South Africa in 2013. Times Live reportedly spoke to a friend of Bey, who explained that there is no validity to claims that the star can’t return to his native country. Abdi “Whosane” Hussein is a longtime friend of the rapper and is also an American living in Cape Town, South Africa.

“[Mos Def] has never attempted to enter any country and been refused. It’s a complete lie,” says Hussein. “In fact, if there was anything criminal against you, they would invite you back so they could lock you up.”

Yasiin Bey is participating at the Re-imagination Creative Hub in Addis Ababa, part of the African Union’s “Agenda 2063″ global strategy to “optimize use of Africa’s resources for the benefit of all Africans.” According to Hussein, Bey’s work with the organization and several other projects led him to reschedule his anticipated concert appearances in America.

is there some islamic connection here maybe hes been hanging w/da wrong people..keeping track of him …and now hell nah ur not getting in…..

    • SoManyIdiots

So you think an American citizen should be denied entering America because they’re Muslim?

      • Thierry P Paul

I think if an American Muslim is hanging out with the wrong radical Muslims .. He is an enemy of the state … and is a danger to us .. He publicly stated he is against us

        • http://lehkost.blogspot.com/ Robert Johnson

Well, since he’s been living in South Africa, where 1.5% of people identify as Muslim, it’s pretty doubtful it’s that. When did he publicly state he was against us? And who is this “us?”

        • CT Jaynes

Who’s this “us”??? I don’t want to be associated with war-monger cunts like you.

          • mommi-is-home

I don’t think anyone wants to be associated with a festering cold sore such as the likes of you. Geesh CT Jaynes rage much!

        • Isa Mustafa Ali

you sir are a fucking moron please don’t reproduce.

  • maxohm

Funny they mentioned it on a quote, my friend told me about this and my first reaction was “But wouldn’t they want to let you back in so they could nab you”? If you were wanted for something.

    • WhoUtellin

Who said he was “wanted?” There was no mention of a warrant or a crime committed. The claim is he was banned for the reason being critical of the Obama administration over the force feeding of Muslims held indefinitely in a Guantanamo Bay military prison. If he was indeed denied reentry into the States then the govt is the only one committing the crime.

      • Thierry P Paul

He left and refused to pain child support

        • WhoUtellin

Where’s your data that supports this?

      • Miz_witch

He owes 10’s of thousands in Child Support….he could come to the US but could not leave until it is paid.

        • WhoUtellin

How do you know this is true? What proof do you have or do you always believe what you hear or read without any facts ?

          • PeaceonEarth

I believe he did an interview with Rolling Stone and maybe it is mentioned in that. He apparently was in court in 2006 over not paying any child support for some of his children. He was court ordered to pay $10k a month, so he probably owes a small fortune by now. If that is correct he would not be allowed to leave the US until it was paid, or so I am led to believe. you can always google it, but I remember it quite well. He never had any issue with immigration, that was just the usual BS from some reporters, that is an easily verifiable fact.

          • WhoUtellin

So you’re trying to draw a connection between a now nearly 10-year-old article to what’s going on right now?? You don’t think is reaching a bit much? The only real fact we have here is we don’t know what’s going on. Journalists don’t lie for those the interview the life of themselves the juice up a story and it takes an unethical one at that to do it but we all know there are lots of unethical journalists out there. It seems somebody is lying but with no real data-which a journalist needs data to create a credible article-we have nothing to go on. If the Obama administration is denying him reentry then they are committing a crime but we have no proof this is true. If he’s making up this whole entire story because he owes back child-support then he’s going to lose a lot of fans that paid money to see him on tour. He’ll also probably get sued by some promoters for breach of contract he already signed. He’s a pretty intelligent cat and it’s hard to think he would do something that dumb and then drag the President falsely into it wouldn’t help his activism at all…it would ruin his credibility but again there is no data to support it either way.

There are a lot of media outlets who should be ashamed of themselves for running with Mos Def’s management’s claim yesterday without checking it out at all. And the ignorance of so many Americans as to how their own government works, their willingness to believe anything negative they hear about it no matter how dubious the source, is depressing.

    • http://www.audiblehype.com Justin Boland

Yet still not as depressing as the American govt’s actual track record.

      • G121390

        Nice….So true….. SMMFH!!!

    • WhoUtellin

Those people who are not prone to employing critical thinking are like parasites and the cause of the world’s woes. It’s the idiots like them that put mass murderers into power.

  • Wordsz

Fail to see how this conversation with his associate either proves or disproves the story ftom yesterday…??

    • Harley Davison

More than a deadbeat dad issue. If you go to the website that carried this story you will see other stories that are very questionable and you will see the intent of the site. It is very anti Semitic

  • gregoryabutler

There is the deadbeat dad issue

    http://www.theguardian.com/music/2014/may/22/yasiin-bey-mos-def-cancels-tour-denied-entry-us

Mr Bey was assessed a $ 10,000 a month child support order by the family court in Brooklyn way back in 2006.

Perhaps that’s the REAL reason he’s scared to come back to the states – 8 years of unpaid child support?

    #deadbeatdad

    • anacoluthon

Bey has other children that he financially supports. Ten grand a month is way excessive considering his income and the other children that he already supports.

      • gregoryabutler

Are you his lawyer or his accountant?

If not, you have no idea of his finances.

The Kings County Family Court, who – unlike you – actually conducted a hearing on this issue, felt that he did.

If he failed to pay, he’s a deadbeat.

If he has more kids than he can afford, he can use condoms, or get a vasectomy, or try celibacy

        • Mike Scorsese

I sincerely doubt his child is destitute. I do however, feel his childs mothers (like most who bare children out of wedlock with celebrities) may have used the system to her advantage. Adeadbeat? Because he allegedly hasn’t paid 80grand in support. What child needs thst much in 8 months? We have to admit, if this is the case, these child support determinations are out of control. I don’t care how much money you make, 10 grand a month is excessive. $333 per day? Really?

          • Dnice744

So you have, doubts about children, women and a man you don’t know. Interesting

          • Mike Scorsese

            Absolutely

        • WhoUtellin

And YOU have no data from your so called source which is widely known to have an agenda. Pot meet kettle.

    • WhoUtellin

Where’s the undeniable proof? Do you always believe anything someone tells you without cold hard FACTS????

    • G121390

2006??? Its what 8 years later Im sure by now something was resolved, i mean he’s not exactly broke. I heard he was banned due to him doing the video of how they force feed at Guantanamo Bay by yours truly the US gov.

  • Lisa Holiday

What a relief. I couldn’t understand why I couldn’t find any more information on this story. He was born in Bklyn, I wondered whether or not that was possibly not true and that’s why he couldn’t reenter. That story consumed my whole day. I worried about the obligations for his tour, I figured when all was said and done he’d end up paying the staff and everyone involved with the tour and the only ones that would end up making money was the lawyers. Shame on whoever thought up a story like that.

  • CT Jaynes

I was under the impression he was avoiding the ridiculous fines disguised as child support levied on him for his protesting the actions of the US gov in Guantanamo bay.

  • CT Jaynes

BTW, this page is a cute rip off of Rolling Stone.

  • darth vader

So, let me get this straight-ish. You’re saying that this guy who claimed in court several years ago that he was on the verge of bankruptcy and couldn’t pay child support to his various baby-mamas, turned down a series of well-paying concerts to attend a free activist conference? GTFOH!!!

  • Clifford F. Zeman

If you lie down with dogs, you get up with fleas!

  • BeachN

    These
rappers want to be seen as a bad azz gangsta type… rapping about hard
core ghetto when deep inside they a wimp running from
responsibility..And people pay to see dat? Appears he is just another dead beat Dad. Does this baby even know who the daddy?

    • Khloe Katz

Calm down with your unnecessary ‘dat’, ‘azz’, and ‘ghetto’. Yasiin Bey / Mos Def has never rapped about anything related to a ‘gangsta’ lifestyle and to stereotype him as such when you clearly know nothing about him, his music, or really anything related to the subject at hand is either facetious or malicious.

      • Rob B012

Seemed calm to me. Stop telling people how to talk.

  • Conscious

    Stop calling him Mos Def.

    • Rob B012

      He’s mos def.

  • fuckyourprejudices

Im not muslim, and I dissent aginst the federal government, does that make me a terrorist? Dont you normally have to commit a crime to be considered a criminal? Just saying.

  • Christopher J Schaaff

    Fuck all sandniggers

  • Pani B

You think someone as intelligent as Mos would start to steer away from religion not thrust himself into it. I was at his gig in London not long ago and he was getting a little preachy. Hypocrite

  • again some bull-crap

“Us” is allowed to enter everywhere in the world and do concerts everywhere and their people can go anywhere (even war zones) and cross borders of different countries in different continents, But Mos “The Real” Def AKA yassin went back to Africa and figure this whole worlds problem and he wanted to make some money like everyones job, Tried to do concert, back to his home country, U GUYS SAY NO ENTER?!? How the hell this is legal! Everyday there is some new shit and media coverage and bullshit going everywhere!!! Let him do his thang! This is unbe- foking- lievable!
