Pharrell Williams talks Ferguson and ongoing affair with black women

Between his monster single “Happy,” producing record breaking hits for others, and landing a coveted spot as a judge on NBC’s hit show “The Voice,” it’s safe to say that the profile of Pharrell Williams is at an all-time high.

In the cover story for Ebony magazine’s November issue, the Virginia native touched on a few hot button subjects of the day including Ferguson, Missouri. The “Come Get It Bae” singer shared what he calls his “sky view” on race relations:

I don’t talk about race since it takes a very open mind to hear my view, because my view is the sky view. But I’m very troubled by what happened in Ferguson, Missouri. When things like that happen, we need to be a united cell. We need connective tissue to be linked by spirit and spirituality. For every individual who gets killed, someone should build a school or teach a child. We really need to balance things with positivity.

Among other topics, Williams also took the time to speak on the criticism he received regarding the cover to his latest album, GIRL. He says he has an ongoing love affair with black women:

I love black women. If you don’t think I love black women, then you don’t understand me. I have obsessed over black women since the days of Jayne Kennedy, Beverly Peele and Roshumba Williams. Those are the women I daydreamed about growing up.

GIRL is in stores now. The Voice airs on NBC every Monday at 8/7 p.m. CST.
