T-Pain on why collaborative album with Lil Wayne never happened

Remember Lil Wayne’s “Got Money” video from 2008? Remember Weezy and T-Pain rocked shirts that read “He raps…He sings.” Remember all the buzz about those two working on a Best Of Both Worlds type album together?

Then it just all seemed to go away.

Well, here we are six years later and we are finally getting some answers.

T-Pain recently sat down with VladTV and discussed not only the circumstances that led to the planned album being halted, but also dropped the bombshells that he was suffering from depression at the time and was once close to signing with Young Money.

“When Wayne got out of jail that’s when all the sh*t started happening when I was supposed to get on Young Money and all that sh*t there. So, we would have been in a different situation,” Pain says. “But the sh*t kinda came to a halt because it was just like ‘Alright, this too much’…Not only was it just like real confusing, but that’s also when I started really taking a break from this sh*t because I was going crazy and I started drinking. I started really f*ckin drinking too much because I was depressed and I was like ‘F*ck, Wayne in jail.’ It started getting real crazy for me.”

Pain then went on to talk about how he thought his signing to YMCMB was pretty much a done deal but Baby and Slim informed him otherwise. He says he then learned his managers lied about the deal with the Williams brothers, telling him they wouldn’t sign him because he had a drinking problem. He soon found out the truth when he ran into them a year later and confronted them.

“(I asked them) do I really drink too much because you know at some point, no disrespect, and I understand if you take this as disrespect, but Wayne was a little worse than me. Like as far as drinking and drugs and sh*t like that. Come on guys, really? Do I drink too much and y’all don’t do nothing too much?” Pain recalled. “I was just kinda like saying how they felt. And they was basically like, ‘Yeah, we didn’t really—we didn’t say that. We didn’t say any of that.’ So I’m like ‘So, what? So, why can’t I sign to Young Money or Cash Money?’ And they was like ‘We don’t like your managers.’ I was like ‘What?’ They was like ‘We don’t f**k with your management.”

When later asked if there is a possibility of the album ever happening, Pain simply replied, “You never know that the future holds.”
