How did you get started singing?

I started singing through my first music teacher, Dr. Lena McLin, at Kenwood Academy. I sang a little bit at church, but never considered myself a singer. Classical music was my first love. I did my first opera when I was 15 and that experience opened my mind and heart to musical performance.

You say you are storyteller when it comes to singing.  What do you mean?

In order to communicate with the audience, I want us to take a musical journey together; it is not about me up there singing I want to make a connection.  I want you to feel what I feel; I want to draw out a memory.  When I choose a song it is one of a story I can authentically tell.   I think every piece of music should be approached authentically and I think the audience knows when it isn’t.

You recently returned from Moscow Russia, what was that experience like?

It was exactly as I envisioned it — it was bold, powerful and colorful. It is a place of history. It has that weight to it; I had some very interesting conversations about the transition from socialism to capitalism.

What are some of the other major events you have lined up for the summer?

I have a big tour of New York in July at some of the premier jazz venues; The Metropolitan Room, Birdland, Smalls and the Blue Note. On July 18, [I will be performing] at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola.

McCann’s “Never Let Me Go” is her latest release. For more information on Tammy McCann, check out www.tammymccann.com
