Why The Weeknd’s brand of bedroom music paid off big at Coachella

The Weeknd was somewhat of an anomaly at Coachella. The 25-year-old Canadian native doesn’t make alternative rock music, he’s not an EDM DJ, and he’s not the next great rap star. Instead, The Weeknd provides a twist to R&B that is new age in the way it’s delivered.

On April 11, The Weeknd headlined on the biggest stage of his career by serving as the final act on day two of Coachella Valley Music Festival.

Backed by a live band and an LED screen that highlighted the mood of each song, The Weeknd opened his set with “High for This.” The song was the perfect opening number and served as a prelude for things to come.

The Weeknd never deviates from his successful formula of making music for the bedroom. His entire set was dedicated to couples, or friends with benefits, who are looking to spice things up when it comes to making love.

Other fan favorites included “Crew Love” minus Drake, and his cover of Beyonce’s “Drunk in Love.” Some attendees wondered if Beyonce would join him on stage since she was celebrating the fest somewhere in Indio, California. However, Queen B never made an appearance.

But The Weeknd was able to captivate the crowd without adding special guests which has become a staple at Coachella. Instead, he used his voice and seductive songs to keep the crowd high with anticipation of the next major artist in music.
