Chaka Khan Credits Vegan Diet for 60-Pound Weight Loss; 5 Other Celebrity Vegans
Chaka Khan is speaking out once again on her new body now that she’s lost 60 pounds through diet and exercise. As previously reported, the 10-time Grammy winner showed off the results of a healthy lifestyle change at the Kennedy Center Spring gala in May. Since then, Khan, 59, has confirmed that she decided to lose weight because of two common ailments in the black community.“My weight loss had to occur, because I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and I also had high blood pressure,” said Khan to the Huffington Post this week. “And I’ve been on medication for that since last year until the beginning of this year.”
Adding that she used the responsibility of raising her granddaughter as motivation, Khan says a switch to a vegan diet is ultimately what made a difference. “What I did was stopped eating and went on a strict unconditional fast for a couple of months,” said Khan. “And went off meat, became vegan, stopped all the dairy, stopped all the meat.”
While similar to a plant-based vegetarian diet, a vegan diet is slightly different. Vegans do not support the consumption of animal products — including eggs, honey and dairy products such as cheese or milk. Additionally, some strict vegans will not consume refined white sugar and some wines. Most vegans also avoid the use of all products tested on animals, as well as animal-derived products such as leather, fur and wool.
With those strict dietary restrictions in place it’s no wonder that the singer seemingly slimmed down in a flash. Khan is said to be releasing a new lipstick and a perfume called Khanasutra.
