Friday marked a night of star power highlighting music’s premier songwriters, music publishers and producers. The anual BMI Urban Awards took place at the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills and recognized the most performed R&B, rap, pop and hip-hop songs in BMI’s repertoire during the last year.
On hand for the occasion was Mariah Care,y who was named a BMI Icon in recognition of her pivotal songwriting career. Carey , who attended with her husband Nick Cannon, was honored by her good friend and collaborator Jermaine Dupri, as well as gospel siren Karen Clark Sheard, singer Joe, Eric Benet and Fantasia.
Drake and Lil Wayne shared the Songwriter of the Year award for each writing seven songs that ranked among the year’s most performed. Nicki Minaj, who was not in attendance, received Song of the Year for her hit “Super Bass.”
