Much of the country has been sizzling lately, due to relentless summer heat, but a little place called Palmdale, California lays claim to a different kind of sizzle that’s guaranteed to be more enjoyable.
The Palmdale Summer Sizzle Concert Series recently kicked off its inaugural concert series at the city’s namesake Amphitheater. Concert promoter and entrepreneur, Eric G. Wilson, brought featured R&B acts, The Whispers and Tony, Toni, Tone, to the venue for a night under the stars – and with a few stars in the audience to boot. Notables from Black Hollywood such as Loretta Devine; Jackee Harry; Darrin Henson; Rocky Carroll and more were on hand to celebrate the series’ kick off, along with comedian and actor,Chris Spencer, there to move the show along. The weather was perfect, the crowd was festive and the venue was, well… “sizzling.”
Both groups made their way through their enduring catalogs, prompting plenty of singing along and dancing in seats. Tony, Toni, Tone was without its former front man, Raphael Saadiq, but the group didn’t miss a beat with vocal dead-ringer, Amar Khalil, filling in for him. The legendary Whispers were all present and accounted for and delivered their signature brand of class and professionalism. From their “Rock Steady” and “Olivia” to Tony, Toni, Tone’s “Anniversary” and “Whatever you Want,” the sound emanating from the open air venue filled the Antelope Valley’s night air with plain “good ol’ R&B.”
Next up for the Palmdale Summer Sizzle series are Grammy Award winning R&B treasures, Chaka Khan and Keith Sweat. The show will take place on Saturday, September 3.
“We are so fortunate to have the caliber of a performer like Chaka Khan close the debut series. You can’t make a better introduction,” said Wilson.
The series will close out later in the month with Los Tigres Del Norte.
