The Harlem Arts Alliance (HAA), an arts service organization, celebrates its 10th anniversary on Monday, Oct. 3, 2011, at 10 a.m. at the Riverside Theatre. The star-studded event will honor legendary artist and activist, Harry Belafonte with HAA’s first Humanitarian Award. Actress and activist, Ruby Dee will be presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Visual artist, philanthropist and former chair of the New York State Council on the Arts, Danny Simmons is the recipient of the Arts Leadership Award. Additional speakers include elected officials and key Harlem arts and business leaders.

The celebration is also the kickoff for the Harlem Arts Advocacy Week. The weeklong series, which ends on Friday, Oct. 7, will highlight the importance of artists and arts and cultural institutions. This year’s theme is “Harlem Arts & Culture: Resurgence & Renewal,” which aims to address the challenges of the arts community amid an economic downturn and Harlem’s shifting political, social and financial dynamics.

Some of the events include a panel discussion centered around African American female playwrights; a discussion on the design and development of the Frederick Douglass Memorial Circle; a night of guided tours and a performance showcase at The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture; a panel discussion on legal issues in managing human resources; the Strivers Art Circuit Tour and more.
