President Barack Obama continues to make historic changes in policy decisions that will fundamentally affect the fabric of America. With his announcement Thursday that outlined a massive overhaul of the immigration system through executive order, some 5 million people will be pulled out of the shadows of American society. This policy is a societal emancipation of those who have been in the U.S. illegally, some for decades, and in many cases their children. Against the objections of a Republican controlled Congress and soon Senate, President Obama plans to sign his executive order on Friday in Las Vegas.

During his televised speech, President Obama’s language reflected the belief of many that immigration reform is also a moral issue. He asked the rhetorical question,

“Are we a nation that tolerates the hypocrisy of a system where workers who pick our fruit and make our beds never have a chance to get right with the law? Or are we a nation that gives them a chance to make amends, take responsibility, and give their kids a better future?”

The executive order does not give amnesty to any person who is in the country illegally. It does however give millions of undocumented immigrants relief from deportation. Undocumented immigrants must meet the following criteria to apply:

  • Been in the country five years
  • Have children who are American citizens or legal residents
  • Register and pass a criminal background check
  • Pay all back taxes

As the president finished his televised statements, he addressed those obstructionist members of Congress who are opposed to his executive order by stating,  “Pass a bill.”
