Swizz Beatz Not the CEO of MegaUpload

It’s been a rough week for the popular file sharing site MegaUpload. After coming under fire from Universal Music Group for a promotional video, the site met an untimely end when the federal government shut it down on Jan. 19. But one of the most shocking bits of info about the scandal was the fact that hip-hop producer Swizz Beatz was caught in the middle of the action as it was reported that he was the CEO of MegaUpload. Now, reports are claiming that Swizz isn’t the CEO of the website and had nothing to due with its current federal dramas.

According to “MTV News,” an anonymous source close to Swizz claims that the super producer is not the CEO of the company, but is still closely involved with them, despite their current legal drama. “He is not walking away from this,” said the source.

Before the site met its demise last week, Swizz was listed as the CEO of the company on the website’s “About Us” page. However, the source claims that Swizz, who had been working with MegaUpload for the past several months, was only in negotiations to run the company.

“They put that up prematurely,” said the source about Swizz’s CEO title.

Last week, the federal government shut down MegaUpload and arrested a number of the company’s members, including its founder Kim Schmitz a.k.a Kim Dotcom. Those arrested were hit with several racketeering and copyright infringement charges and the government has filed a federal indictment against MegaUpload, claiming that the site has generated more than $175 million in criminal proceeds and cost copyright-holders more than $500 million in lost revenue from pirated movies, albums and other materials.

However, Swizz was not listed in the indictment as all the alleged crimes happened prior to Swizz’s involvement with the company. The source claims that Swizz was working with MegaUpload to create “new ways of getting music to consumers.” If MegaUpload is still around after the legal drama is settled, Swizz may still become the CEO of the company.
