Trayvon Martin’s murder has caused an uproar across the nation. The 17-year-old was killed after George Zimmerman followed and shot him several weeks ago in Sanford, Fla. Although the majority of the public believes that Zimmerman should have been arrested and charged for murder, he could actually remain free due to Florida law.

In 2005, the “Stand Your Ground” law, also known as the Castle Doctrine, was passed and states that a citizen doesn’t have to retreat before using deadly force against an attacker. Signed by Florida’s former governor and brother of George Bush, Jeb Bush, the shoot first law allows Florida citizens to defend themselves if they feel as if they are in danger.

Zimmerman could use that defense if charged. However, the entire case could change if the FBI charges Zimmerman with a hate crime. -amir shaw
