Comedic chaos. That’s the term that first comes to mind when assessing Rodney Perry’s “All the Way Live” comedy and music show that popped off on Tuesday, Dec. 7 at Mingles in downtown Atlanta.

If this was how the initial outing of “All the Way Live” turned out, people had better strap themselves in for the ride Perry is preparing them for on Tuesdays from here on out.

Putting a mic in Perry’s hands is like shaking up a Coke can then tearing the lid off. Words just went flying out of Perry’s mouth and in all directions, drenching the packed club with Perry’s brand of comedy that makes your liver quiver.

But that’s not all. Perry came packing four comedians deep, and they proved to be oxygen-depleting, tear-producing, makeup smearing stage wizards. They were picking people off as they were leaving and greeting those arriving with wonderful one-liners. The laughter helped folks wash down the delicious cuisine from Mingles’ diverse menu and rev life up on Courtland Street.

Perry said the proceeding Tuesdays you will see a mixture of bands, live singers, poets and other acts. And all the laughter helps to benefit a good cause as is the case with former NFL star Bob Whitfield [of Atlanta Falcon fame] and the Cabbage Patch Kids foundation.

“I called it ‘All the Way Live’ because that’s how I want it to be every Tuesday evening — all the way live,” said Perry, who we know works the television stage everyday on the “Mo’Nique” show.

Tenacious Tuesdays got cranking with the band New York Swagg, then Perry and his comedic cohorts, including Vanessa Fraction and Smokey, teamed up to ignite verbal fireworks in the joint. R&B singer David Hollister came in and absolutely blew the set up with his hot renditions and the help of female foxes from the audience.

She came packing with her irresistible combination of needle-sharp wit and strong sensual energy. It perfectly countered the wilding out style of Smokey — who as urbanites love to say – is just ‘ig’nant’.

“I was so scared to get up there, because Rodney said if I didn’t do a good job, he was going to hit me,” he joked. “I didn’t want to get hit by Rodney.”

But you’ll want to get hit with what Rodney Perry has planned up for the ensuing Tuesdays beginning at 8 p.m., because it looks like Perry got Tuesdays on lock from here on out. –terry shropshire
