NAACP Image Awards: ‘For Colored Girls,' Halle Berry Honored; Nicki Minaj, Jay-Z, Diddy Not

If the mainstream awards establishment refused to recognize Tyler Perry’s “For Colored Girls” and Halle Berry (sans the Golden Globes), then the NAACP Image Awards surely would.

Berry was recognized as best actress in a motion picture, while Tyler Perry, who received a colossal 19 nominations for his movies and TV shows, received three Image Awards, including best movie, best director and best supporting actress for Kimberly Elise.

Major surprise? Willow Smith took home the award for best new artist, beating out pop sensation Nicki Minaj who dominated the headlines with her hit album and eccentric personality.

Mary J. Blige, John Legend, the Roots, Usher and Fantasia were among the other music winners, while hip-hop heavyweights Jay-Z and Diddy were shut out. –terry shropshire
