Former Atlanta Falcons linebacker Thomas Howard, who was recently released by the NFL team, was killed in a high-speed car crash near his Alameda, Calif., home last week.

Reports confirm that Howard, 30, was one of the victims killed in the tragic collision after notification was made to his family.

Witnesses state that the “incident began with a BMW traveling 100-110 miles per hour — the driver of the BMW lost control and then collided with the rear of a semi-truck — the force of the impact caused the BMW to catapult into the opposing lanes, where it struck a Chevrolet Monte Carlo and then crashed onto a Honda CRV.”

Howard and Zeng Long Liu, 64, (the driver of the Honda) were pronounced dead at the scene.

Howard, a 6-foot-3, 230-pound linebacker from Lubbock, Texas, was first drafted out of Texas-El Paso by the Oakland Raiders in 2006, where he played for five years. In 2011 and 2012, Howard was drafted by and played for the Cincinnati Bengals. Just last month, Howard signed with the Atlanta Falcons where he played two games before he was cut.

It is a sad loss for the NFL community as well as Howard’s friends who were remembering him on Twitter:
