Chad Ochocinco Loses Twitter Fans for Reading Glenn Beck’s Book; Why This Is Ridiculous

There used to be a time when a black man was criticized harshly for his supposed propensity to avoid cracking open a book. That’s why it’s a sad and pathetic day when a black man gets ganged up on and beaten down for actually reading.

Flamboyant football personality Chad Ochocinco was on the receiving end of Twitter rage when he read conservative kook Glenn Beck’s book, Broke, and then tweeted about it. Some folks were so enraged that they un-followed him and blasted the Cincinnati Bengal receiver on their way out.

This is what Ochocinco opined about after digesting parts of Beck’s book:

Gotten through 3 chapters in @glennbeck book and so far everything he’s said is either common or his opinion based off research.” … I don’t agree with a lot of this s— but nonetheless its interesting reading the views n opinions from what I’d like to call the other side.”

Seems like harmless conjecture to me. However, this innocuous statement by Ochocinco was the match that seemingly set off all kind of fireworks from his followers, and some even discarded the reality show star into the cyberspace wastebasket.

“Unfollowing [you] after two years because you’re a Beck fan. Disgraceful and disappointing,” one former fan said.

OK. First of all, this person, and the others who agree with him or her, illustrates a lack of basic reading comprehension skills. That’s a product of NOT reading enough. If Ochocinco said, “I don’t agree with a lot of his s—” and follows that up with calling Beck a member of “the other side,” then that means that Ochocinco is not a Beck fan.

It is not a crime for a black person to read Beck’s book. In fact, it would behoove some of us to pick up similar books periodically and learn what conservatives believe. Malcolm X once said that we cannot fully know what our position is until you learn the other side’s position. Just because you read a conservative’s book or tune into Fox News and listen to Bill O’Reilly does not equate to advocating what they espouse.

How in the world can you possibly mount an effective offensive against the other side and expect to defeat them if you don’t know the other side’s strategies? It would be sheer lunacy to fight a war and not know where the enemy lies.

Ochocinco later tweeted Beck:

“Kind sir I’ve seemed 2 have pissed off a lot of my fans by purchasing your [book]. Gonna read it while flying n see why [they’re] mad.”

I’m glad that Ochocinco is reading Beck’s book. I’m glad that he’s reading at all. Too many of us are in trouble because we DON’T read. And while I think about it, I also am going to read Beck’s book. And I hope more blacks read conservative books. We don’t need to read books that confirm what our position is. We already know what we like and what we believe in. We need to learn positions of people who think differently from us. That’s the only way we will be able to engage our counterparts in intelligent discourse and debate.

Wow!! NIGGAZ, AND FLIES,, THEY BOTH LIKE SHIT! Blackthoughtzzz!!!

  • JAYNE DOH!

do all of you so called urban websites have one place where yall get your stories and the repost them changing a few sentences so yall can pretend you it yourself.

BECAUSE I SWEAR I READ ALMOST WORD FOR WORD ON NEWS ONE TODAY.

    • Terry

Oh Jayne Doh, you cracks me up. Yes, the so-called urban websites and the mainstream websites got the information on Chad Ochocinco from the same source, and it is a source that you might have even heard of before: It’s called “Twitter.” Are you familiar with this social media platform? Here’s how it works is … You follow a particular person on Twitter and anything that person says that is considered newsworthy can be quoted for a story. Since many media follow Chad, we get the information on him at the same time. This is not a new process. Let me know when you join.

      • JAYNE DOH!

IM TALKING ABOUT THE FACT THAT THE STORY ON HERE AND NEWS ONE HAVE THE EXACT WORDING, AS I SAD  WORD FOR WORD.

    • Terry

Well, then, Jayne Doh! Thanks for bringing this to my attention. This may come off a little cocky, but I have a unique writing style and I don’t duplicate others, which means that someone is trying to jack my swag. I find that other sites bite off me quite frequently. I’m going to have to look into this. Appreciate your vigilance.

  • JAYNE DOH!

AND MAYBE PEOPLE WHERE IN “RAGE” AS YOU PUT IT OVER CHAD GIVING BECK FREE PUBLICITY

    • Jtshrop

Jayne, we need to get you into some remedial training in reading comprehension. Go back over the story, this time moving much slower, and you will see that the person quit because he or she believed that Chad was SUPPORTING Glenn Beck, not over whether they thought Chad was giving him free publicity. If you hurry up and join Twitter, you can go back over Chad’s Twitter string and find out for yourself why they are upset. I promise you it was not over free publicity.

      • JAYNE DOH!

IF  celeb tweets about something people are gonna be interested in what he or she is talking about. so dont you think now after all of this people will go and buy beck book now

        • Terry

Well, Jayne Doh! I must admit that you have a point. Even if you disagree with something, just by talking about it you are indirectly promoting it, unwittingly.

    • Jtshrop

  • White and smart

I watch fox news, My family watches fox news, I’m a millionaire and so is every other male in my family and half the females.  We don’t hate blacks and I have a black tennis partner who watches fox.  Blacks do not need to be all on the same side.  Some blacks want to cry and be poor and others want to be strong, and employed or even an employer.  If you work you understand the value of a dollar, If you don’t you vote for higher taxes so you can try to get something for nothing.  Didn’t your mom tell you nothing is free.  Tax the rich and you will be unemployed.  PERIOD.  Rich people leave this country everyday and take their money and talent where it is appreciated.  Keep bashing white people and your country will be like any other black country out there………..poor and nasty.

    • Razor

Sooo…why is a “millionaire”, white guy subscribing to urban blogs and websites? Oh, I know…preparation to mount an offensive against your enemy.

      • GoodReader

        heehee… good one!

    • Vandellish

What??? Ok you sound really stupid man. So you and your
family watch Fox…and? Ok your family is collectively wealthy. What do these
things have to do with the subject at hand? Why not make a point that is
relevant to what we’re talking about? I take it you figured that people would
envy your wealth or take what you write as gospel because of your supposed
considerable status. Whatever clown….oh BTW… I guess blacks (and our
‘countries’) get punished w/poverty for speaking ill of white people??? C’mon
dude. To say this is sloppy and disconnected thinking is an insult to sloppy
      and disconnected thinkers everywhere.

Most of the stuff you’re typing about here doesn’t even
have to do with the article. Nobody’s said anything about taxes except you. I’m
guessin you made that connection because of Chad’s twitter fans’ backlash
because he read Beck’s book and Beck is a major proponent of lowering taxes for
rich people. Well I’ll give you that pass and say that anyone including my own people
are ignorant if we think that raising taxes will help the economy or our own
personal situations. Income taxes do nothing but pay off the principal of the
national debt which is caused by fractional reserve lending and the Federal
Reserve in the first place. REAL millionaires know this and should probably use
it as a better argument against raising taxes unless you yourself are scared of
the billionaire (bankster) backlash that you would surely get if you trumpeted
      this issue.

U SEE???!!!!! HERE IS YET ANOTHER EXAMPLE…OUR COMMUNITY IS ALL THE WAY SCREWED UP!!!!! BLACK PEOPLE WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://mobetterbysheila.blogspot.com Msmobetter

Maybe Chad can be a spokesperson for education and get some of the kids who can’t read off the streets and interested in reading.  We do need to look at what people who do not think like we do, so that we will know where their mindset is.  There was nothing wrong with the tweet Chad made and Twitter comments are only opinions. If it is your choice to untweet anyone, who really cares?

    • Vette500atl

Shoot. To go a little further…kudos to Ochocinco for even READING the damn book! How you gonna know your opposition if you don’t study them? And, according to his tweets, he didn’t necessarily AGREE with what was written! Hello? Anyone home? I didn’t even like Ochocinco before because I thought he was another brainless jock. I stand corrected and hell, I’ll follow his ass on Twitter! Chad just gained another fan.

“Too many of us are in trouble because we DON’T read.”

The unthinking, led by the thinking, will be thought to death.

    • Jtshrop

Uncle Chuck. Interesting and poetic response. But the unthinking will be thought to death by the thinking only if the thinking is trying to manipulate them for their own selfish gains instead of trying to educate and uplift them.

      • Uncle Chuck

        That’s what I said!

  • GoodReader

Drama! An online reality show site!!! “Get ‘im! Get her! Rock em, sock em!!!” People love missing the point…and just going off!

    • Terry

Very, very insightful GoodReader. Never looked at it like that, but folks miss the point so often and in such ridiculous ways that, yes, it has to be on purpose. How else can people misconstrue and misunderstand something that is written in such simple language???

Reading Glenn Beck’s book is like hearing both sides of the story and in particular from the horses mouth.  A lot of problems in communication comes from hearing only one side of the story.  Take for instance SugaBeezyBaby Wow!! NIGGAZ, AND FLIES,, THEY BOTH LIKE SHIT! Blackthoughtzzz!! !interesting comment. it not only says nothing, but it shows he’s coming from an un-informed position.  That’s similar to coming to a gunfight with a knife, you can’t win with that kind information.

  • READ!!

Well if this story came from somewhere else, I am at least glad that this kind of story is being circulated.  The POINT of this story is what is TRULY IMPORTANT.  So many people have such limited reading and writing skills that they are extremely limited in their ability to effectively communicate.  I do not know how many times I see trite arguments begin due to one persons lack of vocabulary or lack of awareness of tone of voice.  Black, and ALL people for that matter, intelligence is the greatest asset.
