Racism continues to be a disgraceful issue in the National Hockey League in 2011.  Although the sport has drawn more black players over the years, the NHL remains light-years behind other pro leagues when it comes to diversity and respect for minorities.

Wayne Simmonds, a black player for the Philadelphia Flyers, attempted a shootout during a recent  game against the Detroit Red Wings. Moments before the attempt, a racist fan threw a banana peel on the rink that landed inches away from the net.

After the game, Simmonds responded to the incident by saying, “That’s just somebody being ignorant. When you’re a black man playing in a predominately white man’s sport, you’ve got to come to expect things like that.”

However, a black man in America should not have to expect blatant racism in an organized professional sport in this era. The black community can send a strong message to the NHL, the fans and those who are employed by the league, by boycotting and speaking out against the sponsors of the NHL. Why should our community support companies that supports a historically racist organization?

Other racist incidents in the NHL include a fan throwing a banana at Kevin Weekes in 2002; Petter Worrell being called a monkey by Craig Berube in 1997; and the general manager of the Ontario Hockey League called team captain Treveor Daley the N-word in 2003. –amir shaw

At the time of the incident, nobody said anything when the “racist”
banana was thrown on the ice. So do the math sports fans; -mainSCREAMmedia, -political
correctness,- racist protection laws based on “racism” and not
blindness to colour, -Detroit Redwings who are known for originating throwing
octopus on the ice, -Detroit was playing at the time of the incident and bananas
have been used as cheap substitutes for octopus before.  And just suppose who ever threw the banana
didn’t like the player because he said something disagreeable to him or her in
a bar. You don’t have to be a racist to not like someone, black or white. When
black and white and yellow and red are not said to describe someone, only then
will we have blindness to colour. Now it’s just an insane witch hunt that
history will mock us all for.

Dummy, you don’t throw a bananna peel at a black man that is in a predominately white dominated sport even if it is a cheaper substitue to use. The obvious implecations have been well received and nobody is gonna believe anything differently.

Why the hell should Black people care we don’t like hockey it’s a white man’s game and this chump thinks he’s white…I’m not sending a message anywhere you think your white and want to be around white people so there you go

@Fatty There’s no such thing as a black or white sport. Remember, there was a time when basketball and football, both predominately black sports today, were all white and imposed an unwritten rule of strict segregation. Do not believe for a second that Wayne Simmonds or any other black hockey player is attempting to “act” white because they excel at the game of hockey. In actuality, all pro sports are white because rich white men own a majority of the teams and stadiums where games are played. So until blacks can play the real game of team ownership, blacks will continue to be at a disadvantage when it comes to sports.
