Diversity and Marketing Coordinator, GMAC

Angela Smanvik is a walking financial literacy teacher. The diversity and
marketing coordinator for GMAC operates her mobile classroom instruction
whenever she stops walking and parks herself in front of consumers aspiring
to a better financial position in life.

“We just want to educate everyone on how to be good consumers. We
talk about all aspects of personal credit when it comes to buying a house,
purchasing a mortgage, buying a car, leasing a car, obtaining a credit card,
and the various rates that you could end up paying if you have good credit
vs. bad credit,” she says.

Smart Edge by GMAC conducts financial literacy seminars at a multiplicity
of venues — high schools, colleges, women’s shelters and churches — to impart fundamental
financial sense. Smanvik discusses credit, financial options, budgeting and how
to save for your children’s education as well as retirement.

“One of the greatest things that we are trying to educate the community on at these
seminars is just basic financial literacy,” she says. “You have to learn your ABC’s before
you can read and write. [So, too, must you] understand what’s in your credit report and
what’s not in your credit report before you start making large purchases.”
