The Muslim Community Mourns the Death of Imam W.D. Mohammed

Imam Warith Deen Mohammed passed Tuesday at the age of 74 after succumbing to heart disease and complications from diabetes. The son of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad, the founder of the Nation of Islam, Imam Mohammed succeeded his father as the leader of the Nation of Islam after Muhammad’s death in 1975.

After ascending to the leadership of the Nation of Islam, Imam Mohammed guided its members towards Sunni Islam and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad. The change allowed the black American Muslim community to gain more mainstream acceptance. Imam Mohammed was the first Muslim to deliver an Invocation in the U.S. Senate and he opened Bill Clinton’s Inaugural Interfaith Prayer Services with an Islamic Prayer in 1993 and 1997. He also spoke before a crowd of 100,000 at The Vatican while in the presence of Pope John Paul II and The Dalai Lama.

A staunch advocate of religious unity, Imam Mohammed’s leadership will be deeply missed by the Muslim community. His Janaza [Islamic Prayer service] will be held today in Villa Park, Ill.
