Nationally
syndicated radio show host Art Fennell, the managing editor of the “Art
Fennell Report,” has covered ultra-important news for years. But the
pinnacle of his career thus far was being stationed front and center at
President Barack Obama’s victory speech in Chicago.
“We broadcasted for five hours. We had a front row [seat] to history. I
told someone I couldn’t [think of] anywhere I’d rather be than where I
was,” he says. “We had the perfect vantage point to report on it …”
Fennell is used to seeing history. And this is simply because he looks in the mirror every day.
As a young news recruit in North Carolina, Fennell was a pioneer who
became an important part of the news gathering apparatus, causing
disquiet in the Tar Heel State. “[A black man] hadn’t done the news —
particularly in the main anchor capacity; they had reporters,” he
recalls. “But they put me out there as the main anchor. It was a lot of
pressure; a lot of people didn’t like it. But you move on through it,
and I made my way up.”
Fennell not only moved ‘up’ in his career; he also moved north to
Philadelphia and saw an increase in his audience, which now stands at
10 million strong across the country for the “Art Fennell Report. “
He says his program is noted because it “takes the gloves off” and spurns “cookie-cutter” reporting.
“We’re going to give some real opinion here about what people are
really talking about — about what they’re really feeling,” he says.
