Method Man Arrested In New York For Tax Evasion, Your Favorite Rapper Is Next

Method Man, born Clifford Smith, was arrested on Monday, Oct. 5 on
tax evasion charges. District Attorney Daniel Donovan Jr. says that
the superstar rapper owes the state almost $33,000 for New York State
income taxes from 2004 to 2007 that weren’t filed. Meth was
arrested at his home on Staten Island, N.Y., and faces a felony
charge of repeated failure to file taxes, which could carry a
four-year prison sentence, and a misdemeanor charge of failure to pay
taxes.

The former Wu-Tang Clan star’s arrest echoes the arrests of many
other notable celebrities ranging from legendary soul singer Ronald
Isley to actor Wesley Snipes, that have been arrested on tax evasion
charges. As you begin to amass wealth it be very easy to lull
yourself into a state of comfort and believe that you’ve finally
‘made it’ and should be allowed to enjoy the fruits. The fact of
the matter is, the government wants its piece and as the cliché
goes; the two things that are certain in life are death and taxes.

When you make that first step towards financial security, instead
of focusing on what car or house you’re going to buy first, make
sure you assemble a crack financial team around to help you avoid the
pitfalls of managing a large amount of money. Accept the fact that
you don’t know what to do with it and find someone who can
make sure your books are in order. Your very freedom could depend on
it.

With so many rappers enamored with the gangster culture, here’s
hoping they learn the lesson of Al Capone. He was a crime kingpin and
one of the most feared mobsters of all time; but when it came time to
put him in prison, the law didn’t convict him of murder, larceny or
racketeering; they convicted him of tax evasion. If there’s one
thing you don’t trifle with in the land of capitalism — it’s
money, especially the government’s money.

Here’s hoping the legendary rapper learns from this situation
and doesn’t lose four years of his life because he didn’t know
how to hire someone to make sure his paper work was being filed. And
here’s hoping we all remember to avoid these types of pitfalls in
the future. todd williams
