Mother of 3 Confesses to Killing 2 of Her Children and Staging Deaths as Accident

South Carolina authorities have charged and arrested 29-year-old Shaquan Duley with murder after she admitted smothering her two toddlers and faking a car accident to cover up her crime. Initially, Duley, 29, was charged and arrested for leaving the scene of an accident after the bodies of her two children were recovered from a submerged car in a local river.

According to reports, the vehicle went off a boat ramp that was located about 10 yards off the roadway into the Edisto River. State Police responded to a report of a car accident early Monday, Aug. 16 and found a Chrysler sedan in the water. The two children, Devean, 2, and Ja’van, 18 months, were found in their car seats. Duley, who also has a 5-year-old daughter, first claimed she ran into the North Edisto River near a rural boat landing in Orangeburg County.

According to Orangeburg County Sheriff Larry Williams, Duley was having financial problems and could no longer afford to provide for her children. “She was a mother that was unemployed,” said Sheriff Williams.

Although Duley informed state troopers that she could not reach the children in the vehicle while it was underwater, her clothes were completely dry.

Duley, who will be arraigned Wednesday, Aug. 18, showed no remorse according to law enforcement officials.

Duley admitted to suffocating her children at a motel by putting her hand over their mouths. The boys’ father has been contacted and is being interviewed by investigators. –torrance stephens, ph.d.
