Behind the Scenes: Nelly's 'Rolling Out' Cover Shoot

Nelly will be featured on an upcoming cover of rolling out.  Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at the exclusive cover shoot. –a.r.

12:15 p.m. – Nelly arrives at PPR, Inc. studio with his manager, stylist, and barber in tow. His barber grooms him. His stylist pulls several outfits before he’s dressed and emerges from the dressing room .


12:40 p.m. – For Nelly’s first photo look, the St. Louis rapper poses in front of a 1940 Chevy Forty muscle car. Nelly lights a cigar as photographer Hannibal Mathews shoots.


1:05 p.m. – Nelly speaks on the first check from his debut album, Country Grammar. “It was a great time for my city. My first check was like $40,000,” he says. “But at the time, I was working at UPS. I figured if I held on to that $40,000, I could flip it quick. I helped my parents, kids and the St. Lunatics.”

1:10 p.m. – Nelly talks about dealing with male groupies. “Male groupies are the worst. They’re only there when the light is shining. They’re on the stage right beside you,” he reveals. “I try to talk with the brothers and tell them to ease up. But some can be your family or friends.”

1:20 p.m. – Nelly discusses working with Robert Johnson and Michael Jordan.  “I was fortunate to be able to talk to a black billionaire. [Johnson] was able to take a young brother from St. Louis and take me under his wing,” he says. “Michael Jordan always gives me the truth raw and uncut.”

1:40 p.m. – Nelly changes into his second look and poses in several diamond encrusted chains. He also poses next to a boom box to cement his return to hip-hop.
