Bethann Hardison founder, Bethann Management On Finding Success and Championing Diversity

bethann hardison

Bethann Hardison’s name has been tossed about in fashion industry circles for some time now. It’s usually used in reference to either her son Kadeem Hardison, who played Dwayne Wayne on the popular sitcom “A Different World,” or with models Tyson Beckford and Naomi Campbell, whom she’s managed most of their careers. More recently, Hardison’s name has come up in connection with activism and diversity.

During Black History Month, Target featured the founder of Bethann Management along with India.Arie, in their “Dream in Color” campaign. In a recent interview at her Manhattan apartment, Hardison shared her thoughts on high-fashion models, diversity and how the phrase “Dare, Dream, Do” tugs at her heartstrings.

Are you an activist for black models?
I am an activist for models. I want to clarify that.

How are people of color being excluded in the industry?
The industry has lost its way. The high-fashion model is someone who has style and glamour and a sense of self. I think she [brings] a lot to the table. What I am offended by is the fact that she is lost in the shuffle. There are so many Slavic girls … [who aren’t] developed and we don’t remember them. The muse has gotten lost.

Why is diversity important? Can’t blacks just have their own thing?
Diversity means let’s keep it balanced. Blacks come off better when whites are included. We shine more if we have our white counterparts — then you really see how good we are.

When you hear the phrase “Dare, dream, do” what does it make you think of?
Do what you have to do if you have the courage. Dare to think a thought — it doesn’t have to be deep. It’s one thing to dream and a separate thing to act. The idea is to activate it.

Define success.
Personal success is … know[ing] that I pushed my life in a direction, and toward the end of my life I can [lie] in a hammock when I want. I can practice something that makes my physical self and my spiritual self … relax. That is success for me.
