Black Church Group Prays for Lower Gas Prices

Heaven help us — at the pump, that is.

People are doing some innovative things to deal with the ever-rising gas prices. Pastor Marshall Mabry of Dublin, Ga., is praying about it.

Mabry and his Beacon of Light Christian Center are seeking divine intervention to repel the prices that continue to creep ever-so menacingly near the $4 mark.

“I believe if we come together and pray as a community we can really make something happen,”  Mabry told WMAZ-TV station in Dublin, about a two-hour drive southeast of Atlanta.

Mabry pines for the times when gas was under $1 to $1.50 and says, now, with prices reaching almost $4, only heaven can help us since the government and oil companies cannot or will not.

This will mark the third time the Beacon of Light congregation has gathered at Kroger’s gas pumps. “I want to start a movement,“ he told the TV station. “I want this to go from Dublin to Macon, from Macon to Atlanta and all over the country.”

“I can’t see how a country like ours, that could put people on the moon like it’s nothin’ and people in outer space like it’s nothin’ can’t make some kind of fuel that would run in these cars that wouldn’t cost very much money,” says Thomas Didonato, who paid $3.64 a gallon on Monday.

“It’s not a white issue, not a black issue, it’s a green issue,” the minister quipped. “If it doesn’t drop down to nothin’ but ten cents, I’m happy with that. But what I really want to believe God to do is drop down $1.50. Hey, I’m glad with that, too,” says the pastor.

The group’s prayer session will begin at on Saturday, April 16 at 9 a.m. at Kroger on Hillcrest Parkway. Pastor Mabry says he hopes it’ll kick off a first Saturday prayer event every month — and that they’ll see a drop in costs at the pump soon. –terry shropshire
